College Readers

The Sunday Washington Post ran a compelling opinion piece on reading and young adults – YA meaning college students, in this case. The author asserts that based on popular books selling at college bookstores, college students read “young” titles that are less political than those college students read in the mid 20th century.  There is a useful quotation towards the end that says young “'people don't necessarily read their politics nowadays. They get it through YouTube and blogs and social networks.'”

Read the Ron Charles piece from the Washington Post, here.

hmmmm.... I guess I see a little bit of what the author is talking about, but I recall a ton of kids reading VC Andrews, King, and Danielle Steele when I was in high school/college. There were not many of my peers that read classics or 'challenging' lit for the fun of it, also we had fewer 'fun' disctactions. I have to admit that I did plan one semester around the broadcast time of the Animanicas.

Oh, nice: now I have the Animaniacs theme song stuck in my head!

It does seem unfair to gripe about recreational reading. After all, I took my trusty copy of The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy to college, not The Great Gatsby.
